World champion for Nuttscorner

The biggest event on the local Banger racing calendar takes place on Sunday 22 April when Nuttscorner Oval stages ‘Shamwreck 2012’.

In recent years the event has become quite simply the biggest event of its kind in Ireland, and this year is no exception with a top class field ready to do battle.

Heading the entry list is the current World Champion, Shane Davies from Kent, who is making his racing debut in Ulster. Davies captured the crown at Ipswich last year for the second time, and is sure to be a major draw for oval racing fans from across Ireland. For many years Shane has been a household name in the world of oval racing, and it is a major coup to have attracted him to Ulster for the big event.

The entry for the event is huge, with almost fifty confirmed starters. These drivers will battle to the death throughout the day aiming to capture the coveted Shamwreck crown. Whilst the aim is to win, drivers can also destroy the opposition in their quest for victory, which leads to all manner of crashing and smashing which really does have to be seen to be believed.

World Champion Davies will be joined on his trip to Nuttscorner by twenty other mainland UK based drivers, including ‘The Bears’ team from Sussex who have entertained at Shamwreck for a number of years now. They don’t take any prisoners on track, and the carnage will come thick and fast. Also in action will be ‘The Levellers’ posse from Lancashire, as well as Scottish star Neil Naismith.

The furthest traveller to the event is the first continental driver to contest Shamwreck. Mark de Laat is making the trip all the way from Holland, which underlines just how prestigious the Shamwreck meeting has now become in the world of Banger racing.

The locals will of course be out to trade blows with the big name travellers, and the likes of Davy Patton, Kieran McIvor and Jonny Murdock will carry the Ulster hopes, whilst Stevo McGrath, Steven Reynolds and 2011 winner Mike Flaherty will fly the flag for the Republic of Ireland.
