League form counts for nothing when it comes to championship football and that was certainly the case at Augher on Sunday afternoon when struggling Aghaloo knocked leaders Donaghmore out of the running for Intermediate honours.

Aghaloo were full value for their win on the day to set up a quarter final meeting with Moortown next weekend. The sides shared the opening four points through Niall McElroy, Deasun Quinn, Chris Dynes and Mark Faloon. Jody McGlone and McElroy then edged the winners in front and while Brannon Molloy replied for Donaghmore it was Aghaloo who led 0-7 to 0-4 at the break thanks to efforts from Gary O’Gorman, Dynes and McElroy.

Peter McKenna narrowed the gap on the restart but back came Aghaloo with points from McElroy and Conor Mullen. In the 18th minute Donaghmore struck for a well worked goal through Quinn after a move the length of the field that began with full back Faloon.

Two minutes later Aghaloo were reduced to 14 men when Ruairi McGlone collected a second yellow card and all the momentum now seemed to be with pre-match favourites, Donaghmore.

A free from McGlone edged Aghaloo two in front but with six minutes to go Donaghmore were awarded a penalty. Quinn took the spot kick but Aghaloo keeper Jason Mulgrew produced an outstanding save at the expense of a point.

Philip Donnelly then levelled matters and it looked as though Donaghmore would kick on from there. Aghaloo though had other ideas and with just a minute of normal time left to play, McElroy and Mullen combined for McGlone to palm to the back of the net.
