Paul wins Bann Wheelers Handicap 10

Bann WheelersTHE Bann Wheelers Cycling Club held the first of their handicap league time trials last Tuesday night on the Kilrea Road, 23 riders signed on for the event and faced a stiff head wind on the homeward part of the event on a cold night.

Paul Boyle presented himself before the timekeeper for the first time, on his brand new Giant Advanced racing bike and subsequently was the winner of the handicap event, Ashley Moore was 2nd and Charlie Wright 3rd, Charlie has purchased aero bars for his bike and undoubtedly these newcomers are beginning to get serious, but would still tell you there only doing it for fun. In the time trial Ronnie Kidd and Ballycastle man Dominic Drumm were joint fastest men on the night with a time of 25.18, it is evident that Dominic has no more intention of easing it up than his training partner, Mr. Madden.

Rodney Young of Carn Wheelers was a close 3rd 11 seconds behind the winners. George Boyd of Roe Valley was 4th in 26.14. Robert Kennedy was 5th in 26.18, Sharman Crawford continues to ride strongly to take 6th in 26.30, 7th Mark Wilkenson 26.39, 8th Charlie Wright 27.43, 9th was Mark Smyth who chooses to be more relaxed in his approach to cycling 27.57, 10th Paul Boyle 27.59, 11th Dervock man Olly Laverty 28.15, 12th Ashley Moore 28.40, newcomer James Thompson produced a solid ride 28.41, Eddie Mc Kinney returned to his old hunting ground and produced a strong ride 28.56, Damien Hazlett competed in his first time trial and the young man produced an excellent ride 29.08, another newcomer is Richard Baker, he also produced a solid ride 29.28. Derek Mc Donald competed in his first event of the year 31.06, club stalwart, Jack Hutchinson 31.20, Robert Mc Kinnley 33.03, Robbie Gaston experienced technical problems, Robert Downes was also delayed as he had kindly stopped to ensure the safety of other riders during the event. The club would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ian Nevin for his services as timekeeper, as well as the marshalls for ensuring a safe event.

12 year old Ailbhe Kendall was the only youth rider to face the timekeeper on the Kilrea Road, Ailbhe recorded a time of 18.11, and will certainly reap the benefits of competing in difficult nights later in the season.

Kay 2nd at Womens TT League

Kay Hack produced an excellent time of 25.21 in the first round of the Womens TT league on the Woodgreen course last Wednesday night to take 2nd place. Rachel Withers won the event in 24.47, this was an excellent ride by Kay and everyone at the club congratulates her for her success, which she undoubtedly deserves. Gary's time as the big hitter in the household was short-lived.

Anyone approaching their mid 50's usually think about slowing things down a bit, this is certainly not the case for Ballycastle rider Dominic Drumm, after coming joint 1st in the club time trial last Tuesday, Dominic competed in a 10 mile TT at the Dave Kane League on the Woodgreen course 2 days later and produced an excellent time of 23.38.

Last Wednesday night 3 Bann Wheelers riders competed in Ballymoney CC 10 mile TT on the Ballybogy Road, Bryan Mc Kinney won the event with a personal best time of 24.07. Bryan's progress this season has been exceptional and certainly the young man certainly has the potential to ride at the very highest level. Stephen kane and Colm Mc Ilfatrick also competed in the event, Stephen recorded a PB of 27.53 and Colm was 28.22

Blayne at Ras Na N'og

Blayne Watton competed in one of Ireland's top youth events, the he Ras Na N'og in Drogheda over the weekend. 40 riders had signed on for the under 14 category.This event took place over 2 days incorporating 3 stages. The criterium took place on Saturday morning, Blayne lost contact with the first group after 50 yards and chased the leading riders alone and finally made contact with them going into the last lap, due to the effort of his chase Blayne finished in 16th place at the back of the lead group. In the afternoon Blayne finished in the first group of 18 riders, placing 12th. On Sunday morning Blayne lined up for the final road race stage of the race. Blayne broke away with 9 other riders and finished 6th in the stage, Blayne was 11th overall in the general classification.
