Talking pump
MANY motorists calling at BP Oil’s filling station in Lurgan wondered if they were hearing things in 1986.
For on the forecourt was a petrol pump that talked.
The device warned motorists to be sure that their car was suitable for the fuel - and not just the ordinary leaded petrol.
Each time the filler nozzle was lifted the pump said: “This is an unleaded petrol pump. Are you sure your vehicle requires unleaded petrol? If not please replace the nozzle and select another pump.”
Initial demand for unleaded petrol was expected to be low, but would increase as the Government’s 1989 deadline for its introduction approached.
