Locals at Karate Championships

LAST weekend members of the Chujo Karate Association competed in the Northern Ireland Karate Board Championships at Lisburn Leisure Plex.

Malachy Devlin (Ballymoney Club) took a Bronze Medal in the Male Senior Free Sparring division. Michael Weir (Coleraine Club) won Joint third in the Children’s Kata section. In the Female Cadet Kata section Rebecca Burns (Ballymena Club) took joint Bronze and in Female Senior Kata section her older sister Laura Burns took a joint Bronze.

Chief Coach Dan Redmond said he was pleased with the performance of his members. This is their second outing at this level and he said they have learned much.

Meanwhile, nine CKA members have been preparing for their Black Belt examination on June 4.

They are: Etienne Wilcox (Coleraine Club); Robert Mc Cracken (Coleraine Club); Kevin Mullan (Ballymoney Club); Nicola Lamont (Ballymena Club); Rebecca Burns (Ballymena Club); Laura Burns (Ballymena); Mark O’Connor (Ballymena Club); Andrew O’Neill (Ballymena Club); Gareth Mc Keown (Ballymena Club).

All nine applicants have been in an intensive training programme for the examination.

Sensei Iain Abernethy will coach at a seminar in Coleraine Leisure Centre on Saturday 5 June (1pm to 5pm). The seminar content will include kata applications with an emphasis or how this can be applied to a self defence situation. A limited number of places are still left on the seminar.
