Great North Links Challenge making its mark

IN only its second year The Great North Links Challenge has made its mark in amateur golfing circles in Ireland and further afield.

Just a glance through the daily results from the hosting clubs, Ballyliffin, Portstewart and Royal Portrush shows that golfers from Hertfordshire, Glasgow, Devon, Leeds and Mountain Ridge New Jersey have caught the spirit of links golf at its best on these courses.

Over the Dunluce links at Royal Portrush individual prizes were won by R. Rosenblat, the New Jersey man, Nick Peel from Royal Liverpool and S. McGuinness from Finchley.

At Portstewart it was mainly Irish winners but English football international and UEFA Cup winner with Ipswich Town, Russell Osman from the Kendelshire Club in Bristol, claimed a prize. Ballyliffin had Robert Steven from Erskine, near Glasgow in the winner’s enclosure along with Mark Haskall from Teighnmouth GC in Devon and Charlie Mortimer from Moortown GC Leeds.

In the team event, Galgorm Golf Club claimed the top berth with a total of 301 points. Team members were Neill McVeigh, Mark Hamilton, David Kernohan and Nisar Khan. Runners-up were Jim and Joe Lenfesty, Ciaran Cooley and Fergal Stewart, all from Portstewart Golf Club with 291 points.

Third place was also won by a Portstewart contingent, Dan Henry, Martin O’Kane, Brian Lockhart and Ansley Stewart with 282 points.

The individual title went to Gareth Ryan from Elm Park Golf Club in Dublin. Runner up was Hugh Hunter from the Ballyliffin Club and third was Mike Moriarty.

This year’s full entry list bodes well for the future of this tournament and it looks like becoming a fixture in the diaries of amateur golfers worldwide.
