Silverwood’s Kelly in stableford success

An increased entry saw a number of visitors playing from nearby clubs. The three net prizes on offer went to golfers in the higher handicap bracket. There were 11 returns with a score of 37 points or better. A six under par total of 42 points was sufficient for Silverwood member Joseph Kelly to snatch the top honours.

Playing off a 25 handicap Joe played steady golf most of the way around the 18 holes. Par figures at holes four, nine, 11 and 18 were his most valuable scores. He had five double bogeys during his round and nothing worse than that. A good stream of net par figures helped his points tally to move in the right direction. In the end he found himself a couple of points clear of the pursing field.

Local member Jim McCann Snr was runner-up with his tidy round of 40 points. This 18 handicapper was in a relatively strong position through nine holes with a quartet of pars at holes one, three, five and eight.

His only wayward hole was the tenth where he recorded a double bogey. He made some amends with a par on the following hole. With net pars on the remaining holes he duly secured second place.

The third net prize went to Roy Bratchie. This local 20 handicapper took the spoils with a score of 38 points. Roy had an inauspicious opening nine where a par at the second and a non-return at the third were his more notable scores. He played solidly on the inward nine to register vital pars at holes 10, 11, 12 and 18.

A tally of 31 gross points earned Joe Dowey the gross award. This five handicapper posted useful birdies on holes four, 12 and 13. In spite of three bogeys and a double bogey on the ninth he nevertheless had a good score of pars on his card to earn this category award.

The other returns in red figures were attained by Ian Harrison, John Forrester, Kevin O’Loan and Michael McHugh, all on 38 points. On 37 points were Derek Johnston, Paul Lyness, Bryan Turkington and Stanley Jelly (Portadown).

The ladies were well in the mix as well and the two lady prizes on offer went to local members. Leading lady was Sheena McStay with 36 points whilst Georgina Hogan shot 35 points to take second place.
