Richard gets Portrush Medal

Richard McDermott won Royal Portrush’s Monthly Medal on Saturday with a score of 68 nett.

The twelve handicapper birdied the long second but double bogied the fifth to be out in 39 shots. Richard bogied five of the back nine holes to be home in 41 shots for a gross 80, this netting down to the winning 68. The Silver Medal goes to John Brankin for his effort of nett 69 off a handicap of seven. John birdied the opening hole of both nines, a three at one and a four at ten. His only slip of the round came with a double bogey six at the final hole. His gross of 76 nets down to a 69.

Tom Bill took the Bronze Medal for his net 70. Even with his big ten at the fourth his good play otherwise kept Tom in the hunt with a net 36 for the outward nine. Tom kept up the good play into the back nine and but for a nasty seven at twelve would have been very impressive for a 23 handicapper. Four and seven did the damage to Tom’s card, but a net 70 was a good recovery from these.

John Finnegan jnr took the honours in the gross department with his round of 75. Birdie fours at the two par fives of two and nine sandwiched a two at the short sixth to help balance an ugly seven at the par four seventh. John was out in 37 but dropped a shot at ten before dropping in another birdie two at fourteen. This was to be the final bird for John and he ran out the nine in 38 shots for his round of 75.
