Pair battling for Golfer of the Year accolade

There was still plenty to keep everyone entertained with two Club Stablefords and a Monthly Medal.

Three handicapper Ricky Cochranes natural athletic ability certainly runs in the family as he and son Jamie completely dominated proceedings in Thursdays’ Club Stableford.

Ricky took the victory with an excellent round, scoring 41 points to just pip Jamie who claimed second place with 40 points. Now playing of a handicap of 9 Jamie and Ricky had seven birdies and nineteen pars between them.

A product of the Roe Park Junior Academy and this years’ Junior Captain, Jamie now has his sights set on challenging for the Golfer of the Year trophy.

Saturday saw a Monthly Medal with some fantastic prizes provided by major sponsor SJ Mitchell & Co. Conditions were wild to say the least with gale force winds and blustery showers at times adding to the fun. Kieran Berryman, keen to win a fourth straight Golfer of the Year title, certainly looks on form to do just that.

He took the victory with a fine round of nett 73 to show that not even the weather can stop him in his pursuit of the crown. John McKay and Stephen Rainey kept it straight down the middle to both shoot nett 74s with John taking second spot thanks to the count back rule.

Golfer of the Year is heating up nicely as Andy Young and Kieran Berryman resume their fight for the title once more.

Andy currently leads on 40 points with Kieran not far behind in second place on 34 points. Sean Hasson sits third on 32 points with Alan Dallas fourth on 29 points. In other news Roe Parks’ Junior Cup team will be looking to progress to the second round as they face Portstewart at Castlerock.

Meanwhile the McCambidge Duffy Open Stableford at Prehen was held on Friday in very blustery and squally conditions and it was won by Russell McGowan (14) who was pleasantly surprised to hear that 37 points was good enough albeit on a count back to take the title.

Losing out on the tie break was Damian Page (21) who nonetheless was delighted to continue his run of good form. Paul McIntosh (12) had his first prize of the week on 36 points and third place.

Christy Long (3) was the best gross winner, he had 32 points and Foyle’s Ronan Sweeney (6) won the visitor’s prize. Catherine McCanny (8) scored 33 points to win the ladies section and Lauren Smallwoods (12) took second in that category on 29 points break of tie, John O’Doherty (12) was the winner of the front nine on 19 points and Daragh Duffy (19) of the Sponsors was best on the back nine with a BOT 18 points.
