Over 200 golfers brave the tough conditions in contests at Dunmurry

Dunmurry Golf Club played host to the Centenary Cup and Anno Domini competitions on Saturday June 6, and over 200 golfers braved the frequent heavy showers and gale force winds in what was more like a winter day than the start of summer.

Only three players scored more than 36 points - it was one of the later starters in the day, Holt Shield player Aaron O’Rorke (6) who made it a family double by clinching victory with 38 points following in his father’s footsteps, Ivan who won last week.

Aaron mastered the conditions dropping only four shots on the front nine to pick up 17 points, however a level par 35 on the back nine for 21 points – the highlight being a birdie on the 14th, clinched him victory.

Second place went to Harry Stewart (17) on 37 points, which also was enough to claim the Anno Domini Trophy.

Harry had a steady front nine picking up 17 points, but thanks to a birdie three at the 10th and pars at the 12th, 16th and 17th gave him 20 points and 37 in total.

Young Chris Black (4) produced a great round of three over par for 37 points which included two birdies at 5th and 14th hole and had to settle for third place – beaten on the better back nine.

David Glasgow (11) recovered from a poor start failing to score at the first and fourth to pick up 18 points on the front nine. Another 18 points on the back nine was enough to clinch fourth spot.

Kevin Carabine (17) also returned 36 points to clinch fifth spot – the highlight being a birdie at the 14th.

The gross prize went to Graeme Dickson (+1) who went round in level par 70 in probably the worst of the conditions.

Graeme got off to a flying start with a birdie at the first, however dropped shots at the 3rd and 6th saw him finish the front nine one over in 36 blows.

On the back nine dropped shots at the 12th and 13th but birdies at 14th, 16th and 17th saw him finish one under par for the back nine in 34 and a level par 70 and 35 points.

Past Captains

Dunmurry Golf Club Captain Sam Blackley hosted a Past Captains’ Day on Friday June 5, and current President John Neill edged out Dr Denis White to win the trophy.
