McKinstry makes history to land Leinster title

CAIRNDHU Golf Club’s Ryan McKinstry stormed to victory in the Leinster Boys’ Amateur Open Championships this week and created a little bit of history in the process.

The teenager topped a field of 150 competitors to claim a three-stroke win at Bray Golf Club on Thursday. His success comes 28 years after his dad John lifted the trophy in Dublin in 1983 meaning they become the first ever father-and-son winners of the coveted piece of silverware.

“It is a fantastic achievement and we are absolutely delighted for him,” said John. “I won the same competition at Elm Park so I guess you could call it a case of history repeating. It brings back a lot of memories for me.”

The 18-year-old shot four rounds of 69, 69, 77 and 69 to see off Tandragee’s Jamie Stothers who finished in second.

“Ryan led the competition from start to finish which is a difficult thing to do in golf. I got a call from him when he had shot 77 in the third round and I thought he had blown his chances but he held his nerve and then he went out and shot another round of two-under win it.”
