City of Derry retain Peter Hill Salver

AFTER an epic encounter the City of Derry team retained the prestigious Peter Hill memorial Salver in the annual match against near neighbours Castlerock Golf Club.

The match was played in good spirits and simply cemented further the unique bond between the two clubs. On an individual basis, Donald Hill (21) brother of the late Peter was the proud winner of the first prize on 38 points, a victory he will cherish for many a long day.

Michael Carroll (18) was first in the City of Derry element with 37 points and he was followed home by Prehen’s hard working greens convenor Jim Doherty (21) with 34 points and Bob Coull (23) who lost out on a tie break.

Castlerock’s winners were Don Turner (13), James O’Rorke (6) and Jim Todd (9) with 35, 34 and 31 points respectively. The nines went to Alastair Crockett (14) and Don Brockerton (7) with 18 points each. Best of the visitors were Ross Anthony (8) on 38 points and Neville Orr (14) on 36 points.

While Jarleath Clarke (12) became the third winner of a Centenary Gold medal at Prehen on Sunday when taking top spot in the June medal with a very notable 43 points and he could even afford the luxury of a blank at ‘Aintree’ on the way.

It was a tight enough finish however and his back nine was the clincher in pushing Prehen’s best Winter golfer Clive Brolly (14) into the silver medal position.

The bronze medal went to another man who had a great winter season, Martin Duddy (17) who finished on 42 points. The June medals will be presented on Friday July 6th after the captain’s Scramble on the same evening.

On Saturday Michael Houston (12) had to survive a triple tie break to win the prestigious Terence Bell Salver at Prehen. He shot 41 points with a vital 23 of them coming on the second nine to give him the title.

Second place went to Prehen’s latest big hitting sensation James Lindsay (2) who edged out Gary Brown (13) on a last six count back and James also had the day’s best gross.

Former scratch man Dermot Canning (6) made a welcome return to the winning circle with his 40 points and fourth place.

The Captain’s Scramble, which takes place on Friday, July 6, sheet is filling up so you need to hurry to get your name down (at the Pro Shop) and the Club’s Centenary Year Book will be launched on the same evening, An historic occasion not to be missed.

Meanwhile Prehen’s weekly Thursday Open was badly affected by the weather and only a few hardy souls ventured out. Best of these was young Mark Mohan (15) who recorded a very commendable 40 points, a three point winning margin over second placed Iain Anthony (5).
