Amazing Annabel does it again

After being crowned Ulster Girls Champion last Friday, Lurgan’s Annabel Wilson headed to Forrest Little in Dublin on Sunday for her practice round for the Leinster Girls Championship.

With this under her belt she proceeded to play 36 holes qualifying on Monday, scoring a 1 under par 73 in the afternoon, to win the tankard for the leading qualifying gross.

Sixteen girls progressed to the matchplay stages of the championship and Annabel faced Clodagh Walshe from Castletown in the first round. At this stage as you can imagine tiredness was starting to take it’s toll and Annabel went 3 down early on but fought back to finish all square after 18 holes and then won her match on the first tie hole.

This seemed to energise Annabel and after a quick turn around for lunch she beat Ciara Casey from Hermitage 3/1 to progress to the semi-final.

On Wednesday morning she met Katie Ahern from Waterford Castle who she dispatched 4/3 to set up a final clash with Irish Girls Close Champion, Julie McCarthy who was playing at her home club.

This really was a titanic struggle and it took some great golf from Annabel to win the match. Annabel played holes 10-17 in 3 under par to defeat Julie 2/1. As Julie was the home player she had a lot of home support but Annabel was totally unfazed by the crowd and by all accounts they were very encouraging to both players and very appreciative of the standard of golf they witnessed from both young ladies.

This is another tremendous achievement for Annabel. At a rough count she must have played 190+ holes in the last seven days aged just 13. Lurgan Golf Club is proud of her achievements and waits with bated breath to see what she is going to do next.

The Connaght Girls Championship takes place next week but Annabel is taking a well earned week off to play on the fairways at home.
