Welly Rec, Tech, Mossley and Nortel progress in Border Cup

Larne Tech OB and Barn United battle for possession in their Border Cup clash.

Wellington Rec booked their spot in the second round with a battling 2-0 win over Donard Hospital at Brookvale Park.

A Mark Green double was enough for the Division 1B outfit to see off their County Down visitors, who occupy 10th spot in 1C.

Stephen Donald’s Islandmagee lost 5-0 at Drumaness Mills in a game skipper Michael Moore described as “a bad day at the office”. A hat-trick from Stefan Mason and two further goals from Darren McConnell and Mark Feenan put paid to any hopes the Islanders had of progressing in the competition.

Newington Rangers were on the wrong end of an 8-2 thumping as Geordie Lynn’s men succumbed to Premier Division top-four outfit, Albert Foundry.

At Dennis Hary Park, Larne Tech claimed the derby day bragging rights with a 3-2 win over Barn United.

Ryan Thompson put the home side in front with a 25th-minute header. However, the old cliche that you’re at your most vulnerable when you have just scored came into play when Barn benefitted from a Tech own goal duringthe next attack.

Jim Pherson’s men were the happier of the two sides when John Mathers put them 2-1 up at the break.

The Old Boys levelled matters 10 minutes after the restart when Keelan McAuley bundled in. Former Larne defender Niall McAllister netted the precious winner with a close range strike.

Garry Campbell’s Mossley, who lead the way in Division 1C, piled more misery on winless 1B team Sirocco Works with a 2-1 win at The Glade.

Sirocco took the lead but Mossley’s James McKinney levelled matters just before the interval. Paul Harper’s 60th-minute header proved to be the difference between the two sides.

At The Diamond, Rathcoole, Rathfern Rangers clawed back from 3-0 down to draw level with 1st Bangor Old Boys. The tie went to extra-time and it was the visitors who emerged with a 6-4 win.

Ricky Beggs’s Nortel are through to the next round without kicking a ball. They were set to host Kilroot Rec, but the Carrick men failed to field a team.

In Division 1A, UUJ lost 3-2 to away to Dunmurry Rec.
