United youth team win Corrymeela tournament

Clifford Adams’ side travelled to Belfast to take part in the Gary Morris Memorial trophy, hosted by Corrymeela FC at Wedderburn Playing Fields.

The tournament was run on a league format consisting of three 40-minute games.

Ballymenas first game was up against Tullymore fc and it was probably the toughest game of the group against a physical side who tested Darren Corry in the sky blue goal found him unbeatable in the first game with a string of fine saves.

Two goals from Stewart Nixon ensured United started the tournament with three points.

In their second game, a 3-1 win over the tournament hosts, Ballymena started off extremely well, pressing the opposition well and playing some very attractive football.

Kyle Walker, Dave Woods and Stewart Nixon were all on the score sheet with some very neat finishes. Corrymeela scored from the penalty spot.

Ballymena completed a hat-trick of victories with a 1-0 win over Drumbo FC, with Stewart Nixon converting a second half penalty for his fourth goal of the day.

A big well done to Thomas Campbell and Simon Evans from the under 17s who made their youth team debuts.

Clifford thanked Corrymeela for organising the event, in memory of a former club member. All donations on the day went to chest heart and stroke.

Winning the tournament is another boost to United’s pre-season preparations, following their successful trip to Manchester recently.
