FOOTBALL: Ballymena and Provincial League Junior Divisions round-up

Three up at the break, Ronnie Burns’ lads continued to completely dominate in the second session and the win keeps them in touch with leaders Newington YC II.

At Ulster University, Jordanstown, an own goal gave hosts FC Whiteabbey all three points as they defeated Carnmoney 2-1. Ryan O’Neill had put the Whites in front before Ricky Thompson levelled for the visitors.

Junior Division Two: Ballynure Old Boys ‘B’ eased to a 4-0 success over neighbours Ballyclare North End. Stevie Caldwell’s first-half goal separated the sides at the break but a Jonny Kane double and another from Matty Grimason made it a comfortable afternoon for the ‘Nure men.

Junior Division Three: A Marc Campbell hat-trick and a Stevie Howe strike saw 3rd Ballyclare bag a 4-1 success over Carrick Thistle whose consolation goal came courtesy of a 75th-minute Paul Gibb penalty.

Dean Meneely (three), Lloyd Watters and Matthew McFaul (two) found the net in Castle Star’s emphatic 6-0 success over Carnlough Swifts.

A goal in either half for Chris Sands and Ryan Clawson meant 1st Carrickfergus Old Boys claimed the derby day bragging rights in a 2-0 win over Red Star.

Goals were the order of the day as Whitehead Rangers defeated Antrim Rovers 6-5. Michael Deignan (four), Gordon Ross and Phil Hall scored for Rangers who had to withstand a late Rovers rally to claim the three points.

Canada Trophy R1: Clinical finishing was the difference as Larne Olympic progressed to round two with a 3-1 victory against Woodlands at Inver Park.

Keith Hall scored the opener for Olympic before Ross Oliver provided the response for Woodlands. Michael Anderson put Larne in front against and Hall added number three late in the game.
