Daryl’s special goal

The former Lurgan Town player is now based in Sweden with Jönköpings Södra and his remarkable goal come on Monday in the match against Orgryte IS.

Daryl, who had earlier given his side the lead, launched his shot from 60 metres out and the ball sailed over the goalkeeper and dipped into the net. His dream goal was captured on TV and you can see it on our website at www.lurganmail.co.uk

Speaking from Sweden, Daryl explained he had a ‘good’ feeling when he connected with the ball. “I knew when I connected it was going to be close. It was a good hit. It seemed to take ages for the ball to drop, but when it did it was a great feeling.” Did he mean it? “Yes. I had noticed their keeper was always coming way off his line so when the ball was dropping to me I made my mind up to go for it.” The goal sealed the game and gave Daryl’s team a vital win.

“It was a big six pointer for us and a vital win to put us in mid-table,” added the 27-year-old. “After the game a few of their players came to me and said ‘what a goal’ and I have had a lot of calls since it has gone out on TV.

“The TV people brought me back to the stadium on Tuesday and asked me if I could do it again and luckily I did it first time. It’s a great goal to have in the CV, the chance may never come again.”

Daryl’s dad Trevor is well know in Lurgan, the family coming from the Wood Lane area. Daryl played with Lurgan Town for six years before joining Glenavon and after a season headed off to full-time football in England with Newcastle United. After brief spells at Stockport and Livingston he moved to Sweden where he has remained ever since.

“I’ve been here for six years now and am really settled. I keep in touch with family and friends and maybe when the season is over in a few months time I might get the chance to come home for a visit.”
