Cup duel in the sun goes tofavourites Waringstown

Underdogs Donaghcloney put up a stern fight but in the end they were no match for favourites Waringstown in the local cup semi-final derby at the Factory Ground last Saturday.

The blazing sunshine set the scene for a fantastic day at a ground which was looking at it’s best, a tribute to all the hard work by the club members during the week.

A decent crowd enjoyed the sunshine and some entertaining cricket from both teams. As expected, Waringstown had a comprehensive win by 168 runs, but not before a few anxious moments early in their innings.

Donaghcloney skipper, Keith Martin, commented, “Waringstown have such strength in depth that their batsmen simply ran away from us in the last 15 overs.”

Kyle McCallan won the toss for Waringstown, and decided to bat first. ‘Cloney opened with the pace of David Marshall in place of the indisposed Gary Knox and the left arm spin of Steven Hanna.

Steven showed his class in dismissing both openers - the key wickets of Kyle McCallan and James Hall. And when Mansing Nigade had Lee Nelson caught behind by Keith Martin Waringstown were 49 for 3 wickets.

The talented South African professional was joined by Greg Thompson, last season’s star all rounder at Lisburn, and they added 52 runs before Pienaar was well caught in the gully by Bruce Topping off Tim McClure for 45 with the score at 101 for 4 wickets.

At this point Donaghcloney were well in the game, but Thompson made a patient 42 and with David Dawson scoring an aggressive 77 and Jon Bushe 51 not out, the final total was 299 for 6 wickets.

The last 15 overs produced 137 runs and Donaghcloney didn’t help their cause by bowling 36 wides.

After tea, Donaghcloney began in a hurry with 38 runs in the first four overs for the loss of Colin Hylands, brilliantly caught at cover for 13. Mansing Nigade and Bruce Topping didn’t look in any trouble, but at 51, Topping was lbw to Gary Kidd for 15. After that no one got into double figures, but Nigade brought some respectability to the total with a well played 65.

The final score was 131 all out. Kyle McCallan had 3 for 17 in his 10 overs, while Thompson finished off the tail with 3 for 3 in 4 overs.

Congratulations to Waringstown, and it’s back to collecting league points in Division 1 for Donaghcloney.
