THE first ever wrestling event of its kind in Ballymoney has been hailed as “a great success”.

Hosted by Causeway Giants Wrestling Club, The Causeway Region Wrestling Competition attracted almost 50 competitors.

As well as the Giants, players from Waterside Sharks and Evolve, both Londonderry and Red Hogs from Lisburn took to the mats in the Manor Hotel.

Under the watchful eye of Ashcroft Vale Tudo, the competition was a roaring success with entrants of mixed abilities showcasing their skills.

Organiser Alan Ashcroft - head coach of the Giants - told the Times:

“We had up to 50 people taking part which was excellent.

“This was the first event of its kind in the area and we are delighted with the outcome.

“We had a lot of top notch players and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

“Some of those taking part were from BJJ and MMA backgrounds and all disciplines were welcome to come along and compete under freestyle rules and all performed well.

“Wrestling is becoming really big and will continue to grow, I’ve no doubt.”

Alan added: “A big thanks to all those who participated in the competition.

“Ballycastle has to be commended in that they are only wrestling this past month but yet featured so heavily on the Causeway squad.

“This can only be a great start to something substantial in the wrestling fraternity.

“Special thanks also to the owners and staff of the Manor Hotel who generously supplied the hall free of charge and catered for us all.”
