Brian sweeps up

THE first Wednesday Sweep of October took place last week. This time around there were 67 entries.

With the recent work on the greens scoring has been affected and in this midweek sweep just five golfers managed a score of 37 points or better.

The winner of the sweep was Brian Clarke. This eight handicapper took the spoils with an useful return of 39 points. Brian had an exemplary opening nine containing eight pars and a bogey at the second. At this juncture he had an exciting 21 points on his card. He was less competitive on the homeward nine with a tally of 18 points. It comprised five pars and four bogeys. This sufficed to put him into the leading net position.

There were two returns of 38 points and as usual the back nine sorted out second and third places. As a consequence Rodger McIlwaine was runner-up with his effort of 38 points. This eleven handicapper was 18 points to the good after nine holes. Pars at holes three, five, six, seven and eight were his dominant scores. It looked ominous on the back nine as he began with a quartet of pars. However he covered the other five holes with four bogeys and sole par at the fifteenth. Still with 20 points on this side of the course he nabbed second spot.

Morris Lyness came into third position with his total of 37 points. This fifteen handicapper managed a steady 18 and 19 points for the nines. On the day a birdie at the first and pars at holes two, seven, eight, eleven and fourteen were the highlights of his winning round.

Six handicapper John O’Neill had a total of 38 points and just missed out on a net prize. He had some solace as his gross return of 32 points earned him the weekly gross prize. John birdied holes seven and ten but bogeys on holes two, four, five, eleven, twelve and sixteen quickly dissipated the gains. Pars on the remaining holes helped him to secure the gross award.
