Ballymoney cyclists in gold medal action

That is winning races and showing that you only need to be from a family-based club to be successful.

Ulster 50 Mile TT Championships

The opportunity to win a gold medal is something that every athlete dreams about and the Ballymoney CC trio of Mervyn Linton, Stevie McAllister and Uel Cunningham stood proud on Sunday at the Ulster 50 mile Championships on the A26 at Woodgreen.

Beating into second place the strong Ballymena team who were using the event as a championship club qualifier, hence the strong field, and in third was Phoenix from Belfast getting bronze.

Fastest rider in the BCC trio was Steven McAllister who was in international action last week in Mullingar mixing it with

Tour de France riders and recent Giro d’Italia stars in the Irish Elite National Road race Championships over 107 miles of

tough County West Meath terrain.

Steven was ninth overal and in a time of 1 hour 56mins and 54 seconds - two minutes slower than his personal best. Winner of last weeks interclub 10 TT at Dunloy Uel Cunningham was the second fastest BCC rider in 1.58.32.

Mervyn Linton was third despite riding the last 20 plus miles with a severe knee and ankle injury he recorded a well below his best time of 2.00.38.

A big thanks goes to team support crew of Eddy McKinney, Ryan Patton and Bryan McKinney for gettin the lads all home well fed and watered.

Outright winner was the recent winner of the BCC Fathers Day 25TT from Dublin, Colm Cassidy riding for UCD.

Super fast junior Stuart Laverty rode clear of the rest of the field to win the BCC race on Wednesday night, on what was a

wet, windy and miserable evening the race set off at a frantic pace with Jason Taggart and Bryan McKinney driving the field on.

With two laps to go the talented junior who is in a steady build up preparation for the National Youth Championships in Cork

later in the year.

Back in action again were Ryan Fenton and Aaron Dickie and also returning from a round of school exams was Chris Surgeoner who in between things was the winning Junior of the Athlone sprint Triathlon.

The results were:

1, Stuart Laverty; 2, Jason Taggart; 3, Dean McIlfatrick; 4, Andrew Boyd; 5, Jordan McCaw; 6, Bryan McKinney.

Without the marshalling and safety at these events it would not be possible to run them successfully. BCC Biesty’s Centra Racing Team would like to thank Joan Trengove and Rhona Laverty, Eddy McKinney and John McElderry, David McAvoy and Ricky McMaster, Ryan Patton and James Mullan and last pair of Chris Surgeoner (Sen) and Paul Laverty.

This Wednesday evening is the Ballymoney CC 10 TT championships on the Ballybogey Road starting at 7.15/30pm. All club members are asked to come along and support this super fast race. There will also be awards for youth riders in the event also.
