Andy scoops another title

LOCAL surf kayaker Andy McClelland further enhanced his growing reputation with victory in the Junior Long Boat category at the Irish Surf Kayak Open Championship in Bundoran at the weekend.

The Dominican College student beat the current Junior World champion and also grabbed second place in both the Junior Short Boat and Men's Long boat and a third place in the Men's Short Boat.

Andy was hoping to defend the Men's and Junior titles he won at the Irish Open last year and took on a strong field as he was joined by his fellow Northern Ireland surf kayak team mates, as well as competitors from Republic of Ireland, England, Wales and even France.

The small waves made it difficult to perform however Andy, who is the current Junior European champion and ranked second in the world, rose to the challenge and made the best of the conditions.

The competition was extremely tight and there was a very high standard shown by the competitors.

Andy is now looking forward to the forthcoming Surf Kayak Home International Championships and the British Open which is to be hosted by the Northern Ireland team in Portrush from Monday, October 25 to Sunday, October 31.

Around 80 participants will take part with teams from Scotland, England, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland involved.
