Youth worker is attacked by gang

It’s understood the youth worker was employed by the SELB and was out with members of the YMCA when a stone was thrown at his face.

Details of the incident, which happened on Friday, June 3, shortly after 8pm, have just emerged.

The man had gone to speak to young people at the underpass at the Portadown Road.

He tried to engage with a group of around 12 youths before leaving. As he was walking away a stone was thrown which struck him in the face.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident or has information in relation to it to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

Sergeant Duncan McBain, Lurgan Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The youth worker who came under attack visits this area regularly to talk and engage with young people and encourage them to attend youth clubs and other activities.

“Essentially he is there to help and make life better for the young people in the local area. It is sad and disappointing that he was attacked in this way.”

He added: “I would appeal to parents in the local area to talk to their children and explain that youth clubs and activities run by youth organisations offer an alternative to antisocial and criminal behaviour - an alternative that our young people will actually enjoy.

“Explain the consequences of becoming involved in antisocial behaviour and how that could effect their future career and travel plans. We all want to work together to provide opportunities for our young people and ensure that those trying to help them are supported.”
