Young drivers warned over wreckless driving near Toome bypass

Const. Shona Holmes said: “Police have observed a number of vehicles that have been either directly or indirectly involved in these incidents and have taken the decision, in the first instance, to warn these drivers about their conduct before taking more direct action.

“Under Article 65 of the Criminal Justice (NI) Order 2008 we can seize a vehicle being used in an anti-social or careless manner that might cause alarm, distress or annoyance to members of the public. Not to mention the court proceedings for the associated driving offences that may also ensue.

“Young drivers between 17-24 years of age are statistically over-represented in relation to fatal and serious injuries sustained as a result of road traffic collisions. Take a moment to think about the devastation your family and friends would feel if you became one of these statistics…..either dead or so badly injured that you’ll never drive again. This is not scaremongering….. this is reality.

“The PSNI are committed to keeping people safe and this includes the perpetrators as well as those innocent roadusers who may get caught up in such incidents”.
