Work of Derrytresk mental health nurse recognised at US conference

A Derrytresk nurse says she feels privileged that her work on the impact of trauma and war on mental health is to be recognised internationally at a major conference in the US.

Patricia Campbell is currently in Chicago for the Labor Notes Conference, where her paper will be launched as part of a publication by leading psychotherapist and author Susan Rosenthal.

Patricia originally delivered her paper to the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme, sponsored by the World Health Organisation, in 2008.

The paper was a case series of a number of patients in West Belfast who had been exposed to 30 years of war and conflict, she explains: “Susan Rosenthal saw potential in the paper to explore the cases and I agreed to do so from a Marxist perspective in line with the publication. Personally I’m drawn to Dr Rosenthal’s school of thought. From my front line experience, I have always contended that our traumatised communities require a model of treatment that is not available here.

“I had the privilege of visiting the Israeli trauma centre when I visited Palestine. It is a world class service and I believe that we should have the same service here.”
