Vandals use stolen digger to go on wrecking spree

At around 8:50pm police received a report of alleged criminal damage and anti-social behaviour at a construction site in the O’Neill Road area.

It’s understood that a digger stolen from the site was used to damage fencing and two football pitches in the nearby park.

Macedon PUP election candidate, Ken Wilkinson condemned the wrecking spree, describing it as “a mindless attack.”

“I simply cannot understand why someone would want to steal a digger and take part in wanton vandalism.

“I hope the PSNI will undertake a robust investigation and bring the culprits before the courts.

“Incidents like this also highlight the need for increased investment in diversionary activities for young people,” he said.

Local DUP Councillor Victor Robinson branded the incident “a crazed act.”

“This was an appalling act of wanton vandalism which has resulted in severe damage to football pitches and a running area, as well as damage to machinery. This senseless destruction must be utterly condemned. Those responsible have taken public facilities out of service which will now have to be repaired at great cost to the ratepayers of Newtownabbey.

“Given the level of destruction caused it is a relief that to our knowledge no-one was injured in this incident. Those responsible put both themselves and other people at great risk by this crazed act. I will be contacting the council to ensure that security arrangements are urgently reviewed to prevent any possibility of a repeat.

“Without doubt some people will know who was responsible for this shameful attack. I urge them to now pass that information on to the police,” he commented.
