A spokesperson for the local authority said it will be undertaking proactive visits and responding to any complaints both during the day, in the evening and throughout the weekend to ensure that all relevant legislation is being complied with and to take appropriate action where necessary to ensure public safety.

Derry City Council’s Cleansing department is also working with traders to facilitate bin collection services and will have additional staff working on the ground to clean the streets throughout the week.

Speaking after the official launch of the festival by the Irish President Michael D. Higgins on Sunday, Mayor Martin Reilly urged the public to enjoy the festivities safely.

He said a lot of work has been going on for the past 18 months to ensure the event runs smoothly and is a positive experience for everyone.

“I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Fleadh Cheoil organizers who have been working in close partnership with Derry City Council, the PSNI, the City Centre Initiative and key stakeholders to ensure everything is in place for a successful event.

“The Fleadh Cheoil is an amazing event with some of the world’s most highly acclaimed Irish traditional musicians coming to our city for this unique celebration.

“It promises to be one of the highlights of the City of Culture year and a unique opportunity for us to show visitors how far we have progressed and what we have to offer in terms of tourism attractions and benefits. We are hopeful that this event will attract repeat business and put the city on the map as a great city destination. “From an economic point of view, the Fleadh will also bring huge benefits to local businesses, accommodation providers and retailers,” he said.
