Tyre clinics to keep you safe and legal

MODERN Tyres has announced that they will carry out a provincewide series of tyre safety clinics at shopping centres in Northern Ireland during Tyre Safety Week (October 18-24).

The tyre checks, which will be carried out in association with Bridgestone, will include a free written report on tyre pressures and tread depths for all motorists.

There will also be a free draw entry and a donation to Cancer Research UK for every check carried out.

There will be an added attraction for Formula 1 fans as Modern Tyres and Bridgestone will display an ex Michael Schumacher Ferrari Formula 1 car and they are encouraging all to come along with their car and the family.

“Tyres in good condition which are above the minimum legal limit of 1.6mm and have the correct pressures may very well save your life in an emergency situation,” said Stephen Shaw from Modern Tyre Service. “The additional benefits of keeping your tyres correctly inflated are longer life and lower fuel consumption, so there is good reason to come along and get your tyres checked,” added Stephen.

It’s the air inside the tyre that carries the weight, not the tyre itself. Correct air pressure is vital to ensure a tyre can carry the weight and perform the way it was designed to.

Winter or cold weather tyres are designed to work best at temperatures below seven degree Celsius, they will significantly improve grip on cold damp tarmac. Winter tyre compounds soften in cold conditions, where as normal tyres do the opposite and harden especially below zero degrees C. Winter tyres are not just for snow, they significantly out perform summer tyres in winter conditions, and should be seriously considered by local motorists.

Acknowledging the donation that will be made to Cancer Research UK for every tyre check carried out by Modern Tyres, Kevin Harper from the charity said: “We are very grateful for the donations we will receive from Modern Tyres and Bridgestone from the tyre checking. Over the last 25 years incidence rates for breast cancer have increased by more than 50 per cent; there are now over 1,000 new cases diagnosed in Northern Ireland every year. But there is good news, thanks to research into earlier diagnosis and better treatment, more women are now surviving.”
