‘Two Cream Cookies ‘n a Wee German’ pays tribute to factory girls

FORMER St Cecilia’s College teacher Pat Mulkeen’s ‘Two Cream Cookies ‘n a Wee German’ will be showing in the Waterside Theatre over Thursday and Friday, February 21-22.

Appropriately, the former Ebrington Factory - built in 1892 and which employed thousands of Waterside women over the years - will play host to a drama that’s the first of a number of tributes to the city’s shirt-factory workers throughout Londonderry UK City of Culture 2013.

The play had its beginnings in the Waterside. An early version - ‘The Shirt Tale’ - was written for a cross-community group which met in the Irish Street Community Centre and included women from Caw/Nelson Drive, Top of the Hill and Galliagh. This version was performed in The Playhouse during Community Relations Week 2008.

However, a full-length script with the new title ‘Two Cream Cookies ‘n a Wee German’ had its world premiere in May 2012 in the Waterside Theatre to great acclaim from the hundreds who attended. Theatre lovers are invited to come along and allow a talented local cast take you back in time to the days of the beehive, the ‘can-can’ and the pencil skirt! At the centre of this comedy is the tragic story of a woman who didn’t marry the ‘Yank’ she loved!

There was so much more to factory life than work....there were ears to be pierced, bread to be toasted, cups to be read and exotic tales of Dutch sailors and dates on a submarine! The cost is £7; £5 concessionary. The showings begin at 8pm.
