Mr Simms, who died on December 17, was 96. He was hugely influential in the development of the YMCA and Boys’ Brigade in the borough.

Former mayor, Alderman Jim Brown said: “Jonathan was very much a Carrick man contributing actively to the life of our community from many perspectives. As a businessman Jonathan along with business partner Alex McBride opened and ran several successful grocery stores both in the town centre and Victoria providing employment and public service, giving me an after-school job when things were not so plentiful.

“As an active youth leader both with the YMCA and the Boys’ Brigade, Jonathan put his faith into action and on the practical side - “faith without works is dead” - Jonathan certainly lived his faith out. I along with hundreds of boys are grateful for his leadership and spiritual guidance as we grew up.

“As a committed Christian he held the office of an elder in First Presbyterian Church Carrickfergus and was known for his commitment to Jesus Christ and the word of God. He filled the office with conviction and faithfulness not taking his responsibility lightly.”

Mr Simms is survived by his sister Rita and wider family circle.
