The Carey Gathering

Ireland is opening its arms to hundreds of thousands of friends and family from all over the world, calling them home to gatherings in villages and towns during 2013.

As part of the gatherings, the American branch of the Mc Veigh clan arrived from many parts of the USA descending of the little hamlet of Carey outside Ballycastle.

Over forty pilgrims arrived to search out their roots and renew old acquaintances.

To celebrate their arrival, Independent Councillor Padraig Mc Shane organised a reception in the offices of Moyle District
Council.

Former Chairman Sandra Hunter gave an official welcome of behalf of the District and presented the group with Moyle Coat of Arms.

From a minute after midnight on 1 January 2013, and for an entire year, The Gathering has started to take over Ireland. The whole country is the venue and the entire population is the host.

Actor Pierce Brosnan describes it as a year where we “celebrate what it is to be Irish”.

While Ballymena man Liam Neeson says: “Whether you’re first, second-generation or even with no connection to Ireland, you should visit in 2013 for a unique experience.”
