Sudden death of GAA player

A GAA player collapsed and died during a training session in Limavady last night.

Magilligan player Steven Deeney, originally from Magilligan, is believed to have been training at the Roe Valley Leisure Centre when the tragedy occurred.

His team are said to be in total shock.

A statement posted on the St Aidan’s Magilligan GAC facebook page read: “It is with deep shock and a heavy heavy heart that we, as a club, committee members, players and the entire community send on our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to the entire Deeney family on the passing of Steven.

“A father, son, and brother to them. And one of the Magilligan GAA group. May you rest in peace with God above. Chuid eile i siochain.”

A spokesperson for Limavady Borough Council said: “At approximately 9 pm last night a 32 year old man collapsed while involved in training with his sports club in Roe Valley Leisure Centre. The staff responded immediately by applying their 1st aid training and summoned paramedics who arrived within 5 minutes of the incident. Having worked at the scene with the young man for some time to review him they then took him to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

“Limavady Borough Council was subsequently informed that unfortunately the young man had passed away. We would like to extend our sympathies to the young man’s family circle and friends.”
