St Killian’s students given harrowing road safety reminder

As part of the 2011 Road Safety Week campaign, St Killian’s College, Garron Tower hosted the Causes and Consequence event for post-16 students delivered by the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service.

The team made a presentation in the college dining hall and then outside staged a re-enactment of the response by the Fire & Rescue Services following a fatal car crash.

The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness of young passengers and drivers about the potentially fatal dangers of being in a car when a driver is distracted or their judgement impaired by alcohol or drugs.

The programme was quite powerful, particularly the outdoor event in which one student, Ronan McIlwaine, participated as part of the Fire and Rescue team and another, Ciara McAuley, played one of a group of teenagers who come upon a fatal crash.

Both then fed back their experiences to 150 of their colleagues who watched from close by. Many of them were visibly moved by the re-enactment.
