Now, families here can do the same: thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Skills for the Future programme, five of Ulster Wildlife’s Living Seas team have qualified as BSAC snorkel instructors.

At their snorkel safari in the Blue Pool, Portrush, on Monday, August 17 at 1pm, the new instructors will get the chance to put their skills into practice, and the Living Seas team will help children and families enjoy a stunning underwater world.

Living Seas trainees Dylan Gray and Oliver Franks are looking forward to using their qualification to help local families connect with the natural world.

“Ulster Wildlife have previously run successful snorkel safaris, but having more instructors should make this event bigger and better,” said Oliver. “Being underwater with marine animals is always fascinating – I hope we’ll help create plenty of enthusiastic snorkellers!”

Before their snorkel safari, children will learn about safety in the sea, proper use of the equipment, and the hand signals they’ll use to communicate when snorkelling, as well as all about the fascinating marine life they will see in the Blue Pool.

The Blue Pool is a favourite site for swimmers and divers alike, with reefs and overhangs teeming with fish and marine invertebrates.

The snorkel safari is suitable for ages 8 and above, and booking is essential – please call 028 9045 4094 or email [email protected] to book a place.
