Rasharkin People's Festival this weekend!

The build-up to this year's Rasharkin Peoples Festival is underway and looks to be another exciting week of events.

The Festival will run from Saturday 18th – Friday 24th June and is being organised by Rasharkin Community Partnership and sponsored by the Causeway Coast and Glens Council’s Community Festival Fund. All events will be held at Rasharkin Community Centre, Drumbolcan Park other than on 23rd June which will be held at Drumbolcan House, 22-23 Bamford Park, Rasharkin.

The Festival week opens with Family Festival Day on the Saturday in Drumbolcan Park, Rasharkin.

“It starts with our 30 miles Cycle Event at 9am, registration at 8.15 am from Rasharkin Community Centre. The Family Fun Day starts at 12pm with entries encouraged for our Great Rasharkin Bake Off for all ages. There will fundamental skills training run by St Mary’s GAC, our new Wheel of Fun, Yoga and Well-Being Sessions, Causeway Rock Band and Rasharkin’s Biggest Ping Pong Race!” explained Michael Hardy, Chairperson of Rasharkin Community Partnership.

There will be many ongoing activities including exhibitions on the story of Polish WWII pilots as well as the Somme and 1916 Rising; Casey’s Exotic Animals; Slush Puppy & Pop Corn; Tombola; Assault & Combi Castles; Soft Play Area; Traditional Games; BBQ; Ice Cream.

On Monday 20th June, there will be a demonstration by Rasharkin Karate Club at 7.30pm as well as a ‘Well-Being’ Walk being organised by the Healthy Club Walking Group at 7pm.

Tuesday evening will be packed with our Rasharkin Pet of the Year running from 6.45 – 7.30 pm. Children are encouraged to enter with their pet where a local vet will be judging all entries. The prize is sponsored by Rasharkin Youth Club. The International Film Festival, Cinemagic, will be holding a Movie Night from 7pm – 8pm showing a number of short films with the young filmmakers, some from the local area, present to take questions from the audience. This event is open to young people 12 years and above. Our Antiques Road Show returns at 7.30pm with two local experts present to give their opinion on the history and value of your ‘antique’.

Wednesday 22nd June is Rasharkin Luncheon Club’s Traditional Tea Dance running from 1pm – 4pm with music by Francis Donnelly, £4 admission.

“There will be great entertainment and great refreshments so spread the word,” says Kate Darragh from Rasharkin Luncheon Club.

That night at 7pm will be our Classic Car Treasure Hunt.

“Our Car Treasure Hunt is always great fun so come along and see if you can work out the clues,” says local organiser Fred Kyle, Rasharkin History Group.

On Thursday 23rd June Rasharkin Women’s Group is holding a Story-Telling Evening in Drumbolcan House, 22-23 Bamford Park, Rasharkin.

Friday 24th June is the culmination of our Festival week with a Family Walking Treasure Hunt around the village ending with a BBQ and music provided by Gerard McLaughlin and musicians who have travelled all the way from Sri Lanka to be with us that night as part of Beyond Skin.

“This week is very important to us as a village and as a local area to celebrate all the work we do together and to continue building good relations.” says Mary Gilmore, Rasharkin Community Association.
