Portrush Air Show to go ahead

THIS year's Northern Ireland International Airshow has been cleared for take off.

At a special meeting held at Coleraine Borough Council on Tuesday evening councillors unanimously voted to to bring back the annual spectacle.

Councillors "were delighted" to accept the gesture from the Coleraine Borough Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the local businesses to finance the 2010 show.

Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Sandy Gilkinson, said; "I can confirm that the NI International Airshow will take place in September 2010 at West Bay, Portrush.

"On behalf of Coleraine Borough Council I wish to thank the local business community and the Chamber for coming together to save this spectacular event, it shows tremendous spirit in a difficult economic period."

Council staff will continue to make arrangements for the airshow to take place on the first weekend of September.

In the past council contributed between 80,000 to 100,000 to the event, with the rest of the funding made up from sponsorship.

The International Airshow is one of the highlights of the summer season in Portrush, with around 200,000 visitors coming to see classic aircraft, modern jet fighters and aerobatic displays.
