Outcry after US women brand Tyrone the ugliest team in Ireland

Pity the dashed egos of some Tyrone GAA players who might complain that the All Ireland is not a beauty pageant.

According to a poll of American women they were found to the least attractive GAA team in Ireland.

In its latest attempt to drum up a bit of publicity, bookmaker Paddy Power carried out the survey in which it asked 1,000 American females to pick the 100 hottest GAA stars. And Dublin hurler Durkin came in at number one.

Westmeath U21 and senior footballer Paddy Holloway was runner-up, followed by Cork’s Eoin Cadogan. Fergal Moore (Galway), Kieran Joyce (Kilkenny), Aidan Forker (Armagh) and Paddy McBrearty (Donegal) also made the top 10. Surprisingly, Dublin pin-up Bernard Brogan could only manage 42nd spot, while Mayo’s Aidan O’Shea was 167th.

The Galway footballers were voted the best looking team, followed by the Dublin hurlers.

At the bottom of the ‘looks’ league came the Tyrone team, who might now be justified in believing that everyone is picking on them.

Perish the thought that the US women might have seen the bearded wonders of Tyrone’s all conquering 2008 team who tramped their way to victory over Kerry in the All-Ireland final.

One ardent fan has already taken to social media to complain: “This poll is totally disgusting and very disrespectful, these guys are out representing their county and don’t need shallow narrow minded quotes and polls taken about them based on their looks.”

Another consoled himself with the claim: “It’s not a beauty pageant: it’s all about results!”

While a non-Tyrone fan remarked: “You can’t have it every way lads!”

“There’s a dozen of these polls every year but fame and success tend to bias them,” Paddy Power’s Feilim Mac An Iomaire told the Irish Daily Star.

“We thought we’d ask American women who haven’t a clue about GAA and we have what we believe is the definitive list of GAA lookers.”
