Petition for traffic calming measures

A PETITION calling for traffic calming measures in Donaghcloney and Blackskull has just been launched.

Alderman Stephen Moutray, Cllr Carla Lockhart and Cllr Mark Baxter have launched the petition and intend to submit it to Road Service as and when signatures have been collected.

In a joint statement the DUP councillors said: “We have launched this traffic calming petition to try and relay to Road Service the very real support for traffic calming measures within the Donaghcloney and Blackskull villages.

“As councillors we have been lobbied significantly in this regard and over the period of three to four years, promise after promise has been broken by Road Service on the implementation of such measures.

“We are asking the community to rally behind us in this effort. We will be taking to the streets, and will be contacting community groups and organisations to ensure that this petition meets its overall objective to demonstrate that the people of these villages want action and not lip service to such measures.”

They concluded: “Both villages are blighted with speeding vehicles, and with an increase in heavy articulated vehicles in recent years there is a very real danger of a serious accident or indeed loss of life.

“When signatures have been collected we will be submitting the petition to Road Service and indeed the Minister for Regional Development.”
