Bus stoned in Greysteel after Relief of Derry march

East Londonderry MLA George Robinson has praised Apprentice Boys for not responding to what he called “an attempt to stir up trouble” in Greysteel.

Mr Robinson was referring to an attack on a bus travelling through Greysteel on Saturday afternoon as it returned from the Relief of Londonderry parade in the city.

The DUP MLA congratulated those who organised and were involved in Saturday’s Apprentice Boys events. He said: “Saturday was a great success with participants and onlookers all enjoying the spectacle on. It was a day of great dignity which the thousands of observers from all sections of the community thoroughly enjoyed especially so with favourable weather.

“This was is deep contrast to those who tried to provoke those participating by the erection of tri-colours and the stoning of buses along the route to Londonderry. All those taking part refused to let such provocation spoil the day. Their restraint and dignity was in direct contrast to those who placed the flags in an attempt to stir up trouble.”

A spokesperson for the PSNI appealed for information about the attack on the bus: “Police in Limavady received a report objects being thrown at a bus as it travelled along the Clooney Road in Greysteel at around 3.50pm on the afternoon of Saturday 10th August. The damage consisted of a scuff mark to one of the windows. There are no reports of injuries. Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area should contact police in Limavady on 0845 600 8000.”

This follows further attacks on busses carrying Orangemen as they passed through Greysteel on the day of the Twelfth of July celebrations in Londonderry. Outrage had been expressed at that time by DUP councillors James McCorkell and Alan Robinson at the erection of tricolours in the local village. Deputy Mayor of Limavady James McCorkell described the erection of the flags as a “blatant sectarian display.”

Community leaders and elected representatives from Greysteel, however, expressed regret at the attacks and chose to highlight the work to further community relations.
