Newbuildings to get new public artwork

AN artist is to receive a £13.5k commission to create a lasting public art piece in Newbuildings as part of an EU funded project aimed at promoting positive alternatives to hatred and sectarianism.

Artists are being invited to apply for the funding to design and produce three lasting public art pieces - one each at Newbuildings Community Centre, Derry Travellers Support Group and Dove House.

Those interested in creating the PATHS project (Positive Alternatives to Hatred and Sectarianism) artwork must have their applications in by noon on February 11, with interviews with those short-listed taking place at the end of the month.

According to PATHS: “The art pieces will be sited in each of the participating areas and will connect each community and symbolise the impact that the PATHS project has had for the young people involved, in relation to insights gained into the heritage and culture of other young people of different religious and ethnic backgrounds across the city.”

The works can be a series - akin to the ‘SHOAL’ twin art pieces at Newbuildings and Molenan which were inspired by ideas from young people from Newbuildings, Lettershandoney and the Foyle Road - or individually designed for each site.

“The artwork will relate therefore to the learning and the community relationships created between these young people and their communities and will be generated through the artists engagement with project beneficiaries and the wider community.”

The successful artist will be expected to hold workshops and focus groups with local communities to gain their thoughts, ideas and opinions towards the design of the art pieces.

“Through this process the artists will create a sense of ownership and pride in the final artwork,” says the PATHS public notice inviting applications for the commission.

“The total budget available for the full commission inclusive of consultation, design, fabrication, insurance, transport, installation on site/s and specialist fees is £13,500 inclusive of VAT,” it adds.

Further details and an artist brief can be obtained by contacting Marie Boyle at Dove house Community Trust, 32 Meenan Square, BT48 9EX. Closing date for applications is noon February 11, 2011.
