New crossing planned after pedestrian's death in Carrick

It is one a series of road safety measures for Rodgers Quay planned by the Department for Regional Development.

The proposals follow TransportNI site meetings with Mid and East Antrim Councillor Jim Brown, who raised concerns following the death of a female pedestrian at the location last September.

In a letter before MEA Council’s Community Planning Committee on Tuesday (February 9) evening, DRD explained: “Following those discussions TransportNI is proposing to introduce road safety measures which include a zebra crossing, additional footway provision and traffic calming within the Rodgers Quay area.

“As part of the road safety measures, TransportNI is proposing to prohibit traffic from turning right on the A2 Belfast Road into Rodgers Quay and from Rodgers Quay unto A2 Belfast Road. This will reduce the number of collisions at this particular junction and have a positive impact on through traffic at peak times of the day.

“It is also proposed to prohibit traffic on Rodgers Quay from turning right into harbour car park. This will facilitate the introduction of a zebra crossing, provision of a refuge island and revisions to the existing footway provision in order to improve road safety.”

DRD is also planning speed cushions and pedestrian refuge islands on Rodgers Quay.

Mr Brown said: “I welcome the positive response from DRD. It’s another accident black spot in the town which has been attended to.”

“Perpetual accidents on the North Road now needs to be looked at. There’s a speed aspect, vision problems and what is now a major arterial route into town but is not up to that standard.
