THE Mayor of Coleraine, councillor Norman Hillis has called on the residents of the borough, to support the Poppy Appeal

As Remembrance Sunday approaches, councillor Hillis paid tribute to the Royal British Legion, who have been committed to helping members of the serving and ex-service community since 1921.

He said: " As Mayor of Coleraine, I call upon the residents of the Borough to continue their support for the Royal British Legion and get behind the 2010 Poppy Appeal.

"Remembrance is not just about those who fought in the two world wars of the last century, but also about those involved in the many conflicts since 1945 and for those still fighting for peace today.

"We will never forget those who have fought for our country in global conflict and those who have lost their lives in the process.

"It is particularly poignant that this year we call to mind the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain air fight and remember those who lost their lives during it. "

The Mayor went on: "This year the Royal British Legion is focusing their support for the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces family.

"Since 2003 the Legion has assisted more than 10,000 serving, ex-service and family members who are part of the Afghan and Iraq generations. As the conflict in Afghan persists, at its unwavering intensity, it is inevitable that the need for support will continue; giving to this worthy appeal will help the Legion with their intended efforts.

"Through the immense generosity of the people contributing to the annual Poppy Appeal, the Legion raised 35 million in 2009. These funds provide much needed and appreciated financial, social and emotional support to many.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone over the age of 16 who would like to get involved with collecting for the Poppy Appeal to contact their local branch of the Royal British Legion.

"It is essential that the Legion recruit new volunteers and I know the Borough of Coleraine has many generous and able young people.

"Please, when you see a Poppy Appeal collection box in your school, church, local shop or place of work, think of those who benefit from your donation and what it means to them to have your support," said councillor Hillis.
