Health: Council joins forces with MindWise

The Council’s association with independent charity MindWise was launched by the Council’s mental health champions, Councillors David Arthurs and Noreen McClelland.

MindWise provides a number of vital services for people suffering from mental illness. This includes offering safe and affordable housing for those struggling to adapt to the changes involved when they move back to independent living after a period of time in hospital. They also provide informal social contact through one-to-one meetings and group work as well as a range of other services.

Speaking after the launch, Cllr Arthurs explained that he wanted to help dispel the stigma which surrounds mental illness.

“Too often mental health problems are hidden by those who suffer. In my role as one of the mental health champions for the council I want to play my part in dispelling the sigma which unfortunately surrounds this illness,” the TUV representative said.

SDLP Cllr Noreen McClelland hopes that the services will be beneficial to people affected by mental illness.

“The issue of mental health affects a lot of people. I’m pleased that the Council has joined up with MindWise, and I hope that in my role as a mental health champion I will be able to help give more support to people who have been impacted by mental health issues,” she said.
