Great War remembered

The local Society is bidding for funding for the commemoration event to be staged in Ballymoney town on the weekend of 1st/2nd August 2014.

The proposed event, entitled “THE GREAT WAR REMEMBERED”, is still at the planning stage, but is expected to include displays of World War I vehicles, memorabilia and stories in addition to military displays, a family fun day and a memorial service and parade.

Mayor John Finlay said: “Council is pleased to pledge its support to this event and to commit match funding to support the initiative by Ballymoney & District Cultural & Heritage Society. People from this community, like communities elsewhere, enlisted, or were called up, in their thousands. The war years affected everyone’s life in one way or another. It is fitting that in the centenary year we remember the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces in order that future generations are able to live in peace and freedom.”

Noel Anderson, Chair of the Ballymoney & District Cultural & Heritage Society said: “Remembrance transcends all boundaries and this project will seek to create a better understanding of one of the major historical events of our past. In addition to the main public events we plan to include workshops for local primary school children in the run up to the commemoration weekend, with the key focus on those from this area who gave their lives”.
