Governor congratulates Apprentice Boys of Derry

THE Governor General of the Apprentice Boys of Derry has congratulated the organisation's membership after Saturday's annual Relief of Derry parade.

Jim Brownlee said: “The 321st Annual Commemoration of the Relief of Londonderry was a credit to the Apprentice Boys of Derry and a credit to the historic City of Londonderry. There was a celebratory atmosphere throughout the day, as there has been throughout the week of the Maiden City Festival. The Festival brought together people from across the city, from all communities, and visitors from across Northern Ireland and from far beyond. The crowds of visitors and tourists on Saturday too showed the potential attraction of the unique character of the City, and the Apprentice Boys of Derry and the annual days of Commemoration for the Siege of Londonderry 1688-1689.

“Of course we had a serious bombing last week on the Strand Road, and a bomb scare on the Saturday morning of the Commemoration. In recent months there has been a marked increase in attacks on Protestant persons and property around Londonderry. That represents the actions of a desperate and sad minority who wish to resurrect sectarian demons and bring violent hatred onto our streets.”

“The Apprentice Boys of Derry have been greatly gladdened by neighbours in the city offering many messages of support and goodwill in recent weeks, and showing that support and goodwill in attending Festival events. The people of the city are longing to move on, together. For our part we look forward to building upon the mood of celebration enjoyed at the Maiden City Festival and the 321st Annual Commemoration in years to come.”
