Former Liverpool star who played with Beckham at LA Galaxy is visiting Mid Ulster

And we know he’s here, because this afternoon the ex-Portugal international, now a football coach, visited the Mid Ulster Mail office with Sofia player Alberto Debarras.

Although no public appearances have been planned, he and number of other football stars may be out and about in Magherafelt this weekend.

The reason for the visit - to help Alberto promote and grow the Magherafelt club as it marks six months.

As well as fielding for Liverpool and Everton, Xavier trained at Sporting Lisbon and has spent time with LA Galaxy, playing alongside David Beckham.

During his visit to the Mail, Xavier told the Mail: “I played for many clubs, I have an international career, not just in England. But in England I played for Everton and Liverpool and Middlesborough.”

Asked about the transition “across the park” he added: “It was a difficult decision... but I’m glad. When I return to Liverpool I am very well received by both sides.”

As for why he’s here, he said: “I am attracted to see different realities. People want to speak about football, people want to understand how you can grow and make a statement through football.

“I was invited to come here and understand about the new reality of this town, they want to compete, they want a good structure and they want to professionalise a few things.”

“I came here and I am glad to give my feedback to them about my experience. Anything is possible.”

Alberto added: “What we’re trying to do is show him what we do, how we do it because this is the six-month review of the club and we need to show everyone where we are going.”
