PONC were accompanied by two of their consultants, from Michael Burroughs Associates and Corvus Consulting, paid for by community crowdfunding, to talk to councillors about the legal and environmental issues with Rathlin Energy’s well application.

Councillors also heard from Rathlin Energy, the Canadian-owned company that has applied to drill an exploratory well into the shale at Ballinlea, between Bushmills and Ballycastle.

A PONC spokesperson said that feedback from councillors after the workshop was very positive and that “it was clear that Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Councillors are as keen to protect the health and vitality of the region as PONC is”.

Farmers For Action UK NI (FFA UK NI) supported Protect Our North Coast at the Causeway Coast and Glens Council offices. William Taylor, FFA UK NI co-ordinator, said “The last thing we need for our clean and green image is the onslaught of oil and gas exploration.”
