Danny Boy Festival has something for everyone

THE fabulous Roe Valley Children’s Speech and Drama Festival lifts the curtain on a jam packed Danny Boy Festival, 2013.

More than 500 school children from all over the Borough will perform over two days - May 16 and 17 - in Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre/Ionad Ealaíon agus Cultúir Ghleann na Ró.

The amazing purpose built ArtCart vehicle will be available for children to try out sound recording, digital music and photography outside in Drumceatt Square from noon - 2pm on Friday 17 May. Admission is free.

The 2013 musical extravaganza kicks off with Katie and the Carnival on Friday, May 17.

Katie’s music is soulful, dark and harmony-driven with influences from indie, folk, rock and pop.

Known for her engaging and creative live performances, you never know what you might see at a ‘Katie and the Carnival’ gig - dancing unicorns, TV tents, samba drummers?

Calling all you heritage buffs!

Celebrate the legend of Rory Dall O’Cahan’s ‘The Lament of the O’Cahan’s’ which became the world famous tune Danny Boy, with the unveiling of the new Danny Boy sculpture in Dungiven Castle Park on Friday May 17 at 2pm. Admission is free.

Living History comes to Limavady on Saturday, May 18. Come and take a walking tour between 11am and 2pm to relive the story of Danny Boy.

Don’t miss Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas on Saturday, May 18 in Drumceatt Square from 1pm.

Paddy’s unique blend of Folk-Pop-Punk-Country-Blues leaves audiences reveling in his rich lyrics and big melodies. Admission is free.

The Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre is delighted to welcome the enthusiastic and infectious Four Men & A Dog as the headline act for this year’s festival on Saturday, May 18.

This highly acclaimed band made a name for themselves with their eclectic and vivacious blend of traditional Irish music with a wide spectrum of other genres, including rap, Southern rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, polka, country swing, and even salsa. A lively and entertaining evening is assured.

Chill out on Sunday, May 19 from 1-4pm and come along to Folk and Trad at the Green Lane Museum in Roe Valley Country Park featuring David Dunlop, Heather Montgomery, Deirdre Havelin and George Murphy. Admission is free.

The Danny Boy Festival offers an artistic feast including an adult workshop on the amazing world of paper sculpture with Rachel Dickson on Saturday, May 18.

With such an array of events, there is no doubt that it’s going to be a fantastic weekend of music, activity and entertainment for both visitors to the area and the local community.
