Man smeared his faeces on cell walls

Aaron David Millar (22), of Barnewall Place, is charged with burglary, taking a motor vehicle without consent and possessing offensive weapons, as well as criminal damage on July 26.

Police were notified that Millar had breached his bail and saw him in the early hours of the morning pushing a motorcycle along Foyle Road. Keys to the bike were in his possession, together with a potato peeler and a pronged instrument.

The court was told a burglary was reported a short time later and the injured party reported his bed had been overturned and the keys to his bike were stolen. It was alleged this matched the bike Millar was pushing.

In interview, Miller talked nonsense and refused to answer questions and when placed in a police cell he defecated extensively and smeared it around the walls and camera of the cell. An investigating officer said this caused disruption to police activity over the weekend and would cost the PSNI money to repair the damage.

Opposing bail, the officer told the court police feared Millar will commit further offences.

Steven Mooney, defending said Miller had significant mental health difficulties and custody would reduce his access to help he needed.

District Judge Barney McElholm refused bail, saying: “Whatever help others are trying to provide for him is not working.”

Millar will appear in court via videolink on August 13.
