Attempted communication with child

A man has pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to obtain sexual gratification by intentionally communicating with a child under the age of 16.

Forty-three-year-old Shane Currie with an address at King William III Crescent, Maghera, is accused of committing the offence on November 10 last.

Adjourning the case until October 21 for a pre-sentence report, District Judge Oonagh Mullan remarked she had read a transcript of the messages, and said she would like to obtain more information about the defendant’s background before sentencing him.

Currie appeared by video link at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday from Maghaberry Prison where he is on currently on remand for another matter.

Defence lawyer Noel Dillon explained that Currie has been in custody for five weeks arising out of an allegation of making a threat to kill in Derry.
